Why isn't the 1992 Dream Team #1?

We ran the model many different ways and questioned this ourselves. Ultimately, the model we ended up deploying uses multiple years of data to smooth out fluctuations, which mathematically dampens the impact of adding NBA players to the 1992 US squad. The Dream Team also dominated competition that was outmatched at the time but has stepped up substantially since, meaning large margins of victory then carry less weight in the model than similar margins today against significantly stronger opponents. As a result, USA's 1994 and 1996 ratings mathematically reflect and build on the Dream Team's impact, even if no model can match its cultural legacy. This cross-year blending is a tradeoff inherent to any rolling rating system.
